Nick Kyrgios: Canadians Support Their Athletes Better Than Australians Do

Following a peculiar loss to 17-year-old Denis Shapovalov last night, Nick Kyrgios said that Australian fans don’t support their players in the way that Canadians do.

“I think the Canadians probably support their athletes a little better than the Australians do,” Kyrgios said.

When asked to clarify the statement, he said, “I think it speaks for itself.”

Of course, Kyrgios’ antics might not help his cause, especially after the performance he gave last night.

During the match, Kyrgios often served his first serve on his second leading to an eye-popping 18 doubles faults. The lazy movement and disinterested attitude didn’t help much either leaving some question his intent on the court.

“Jeez, I didn’t know I had that many double faults. That’s pretty bad,” he said. “It was just bad serving day, I guess. I need to practice a little more.”

He was very gracious to his opponent, Shapavalov, who picked up his first career ATP win.

“Obviously he can play in big moments. He won Wimbledon, obviously. That’s not easy,” Kyrgios said. “It’s going to be good. He plays 300 still. He has a long way to go obviously to get to the top 100 but I have no doubt he will get there quickly. He has to keep playing his game and keep working hard.

“He has a great future. I’m really looking forward to see how he’s going to progress into the seniors and transition. He’s a top player.”

Not only did the Shapovalov bother Kyrgios, so too did the heat! See this exchange:

Q. Just the way you have come in suggests that there was a physical problem with your knee.
NICK KYRGIOS: It’s just a bit hot outside.

Q. It wasn’t a problem during the match?
NICK KYRGIOS: No. It’s just a bit hot.

Kyrgios, who is scheduled for Atlanta next week, is back on the court today in doubles.

RZ Says:

I wonder if this statement is really about how much the Australians support all Australian athletes, or how much they support Kyrgios (or even Tomic)?

jane Says:

it’s probably a dig, given his on-going issues with the committee.

i find it weird what he said about the knee; he had a huge bag of ice on it during his press conference.

AndyMira Says:

It’s easy nick..neither the Canadian players have an attitude and behaviour like you! So,it’s easy to love and support them…Hmm..still in a world of his own..it’s a shame..what a waste of talent..
