In the match of the day in Tokyo, Gael Monfils earned a spot in the quarterfinals after beating countryman Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-4 Thursday.

Monfils fought back from 4-1 down in the second to win the last five games of the match.

“In the second set, Gilles started to run a lot better. He played really great for four games or so and I knew I needed to be patient for his level to come back down a bit,” Monfils said. “At the same time, I still needed to be the aggressor. I’ve made improvements mentally, physically and technically this year, and that helped me today against Gilles.”

Nick Kyrgios got a walkover from Radek Stepanek who withdrew with a back injury.

Big servers Ivo Karlovic and Gilles Muller also advanced.

On Friday in the quarters, Monfils will take on Karlovic, Goffin gets Joao Sousa, Kyrgios meets Muller and Marin Cilic faces Juan Monaco.

“Monfils has been playing much better this year,” Karlovic said of Monfils. “He made some changes to his service motion, bringing up his right leg, which have helped him. He’s a Top 10 player now and can only go up from here.”

All five sets Karlovic has played this week have gone to a tiebreaker.

With Kei Nishikori and Tomas Berdych ousted Wednesday, no former champions remain in the final eight.
