Kyrgios Handles Monfils, Faces Goffin For Tokyo Title
Nick Kyrgios will bid for a third career title Sunday in Tokyo after the Australian dispatched Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4.
“It was an unbelievable match, we both played very well,” Kyrgios said. “The crowd loved it and we both had a lot of fun out there. Not many people on tour can hit the type of shots Gael can. He’s an unbelievable entertainer and athlete. We play different games. I rely on my serve more, but I want to work to become as athletic as he is and also be an entertainer like him.”
Kyrgios will meet David Goffin who was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over former US Open champion Marin Cilic.
“I didn’t play my best tennis at the beginning of the week, but match by match I was able to find my rhythm,” Goffin said. “I was nervous in the first round against Nishioka, who played a good match. Today I was playing much better. It’s a small mental thing, but once you are comfortable and playing freely, it makes a big difference on the court.”
Kyrgios and Goffin have never met. Both are seeking their third career titles.
