It’s Win And In For Svetlana Kuznetsova In The Moscow Final Saturday
It’s simple, if Svetlana Kuznetsova beats Daria Gavrilova Saturday for the Moscow title, she earns the final spot in the WTA Finals in Singapore.
If Kuznetsova loses, that final spot in Singapore goes to Brit Johanna Konta who is already there ready to serve as the alternate if the Russian wins.
Earlier today, Kuznetsova had to fight off Elina Svitolina in a tough semifinal 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-4.
“I knew what I had to do but in the second set I stopped playing the ‘right’ tennis. I realized what was going on, I understood it was wrong but couldn’t do anything about it. And I had to play three sets,” Kuznetsova said.
The Moscow-born Gavrilova toppled Julia Georges 7-5, 6-1 to reach her first career WTA final.
“In the final I know Sveta will get a lot of support, but this is normal,” Gavrilova said. “It has been a great week and I am playing with no pressure so I will go out and play my game and see what happens.”
Kuznetsova has won both meetings with the spunky Australian most recently this year at Rome in three sets.
