Andy Murray is closing on world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, and Vienna this week could be a big part of the Brit having a shot at catching the Serb at the year-end championships.
ADHEREL
Murray faces two other Top 10 players and a slew of dangerous floaters, with almost-guaranteed testers in the second and third rounds.
Here’s a closer look at the Vienna field:
ERSTE BANK OPEN 500
Vienna, Austria; Surface: carpet
Seeds: Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych, Dominic Thiem, Roberto Bautista Agut, David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Lucas Pouille, Ivo Karlovic
Floaters: Gilles Simon, John Isner, Feliciano Lopez, Kyle Edmund, Steve Johnson
Notes: Solid field with three Top 10ers…No byes for the seeds…Tough starts for (7) Pouille vs. F-Lo, (5) Ferrer vs. the riser Edmund, and (8) Karlovic vs. the defending runner-up Johnson…Wildcards were awarded to Russian Karen Khachanov and Austrians Gerald and Jurgen Melzer…Sam Querrey and Bernard Tomic withdrew from the event…Ferrer beat Johnson in last year’s final…Former champs in the field are Ferrer (2015), Murray (2014), Tsonga (2011), Jurgen Melzer (2010-09), and F-Lo (2004)…Fun Fact: former No. 1 Thomas Muster never won his homecountry Vienna Open, going 0-3 in career finals.
