Earlier this month on November 7, the WTA released its official year-end rankings. Angelique Kerber was the star on the season climbing from No. 10 all the way to No. 1 during her incredible year, eclipsing Serena Williams.

Several women made big moves in 2016. Dominika Cibulkova overcame injury to leap from No. 38 to a career-best No. 5. Wimbledon semifinalist Elena Vesnina vaulted 111 spots to No. 16. Brit star Johanna Konta had her best season rising from No. 47 to No. 10.

US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova joined Madison Keys and Konta as Top 10 year-end debutants.

Only five players from the 2015 year-end rankings stayed in the Top 10 with Flavia Pennetta retired, Maria Sharapova under suspension and Lucie Safarova plunging from No. 9 to No. 64.

The Czech Republic did well boasting three players in the Top 20, equalling the U.S.

And three players posted their first Top 20 year-end ranking finish: 10 Konta, 16 Vesnina and 20 Strycova.

Willow Says:

I Doubt Serena will be that bothered about being number 1 anymore, i think the thing she really wants is to surpass Steffi and win more GS, its as as simple as that now for her ….

Also it will be interesting to see what kind of impression Sharapova will have, when she eventually returns to the tour, if any at all ?, some of the top players could run into her early in a GS, so depending on how she starts when she returns, she could be dangerous ….
