Wozniacki, Pliskova Advance To Rainy Doha Final
It’s been a very good week so far for Caroline Wozniacki. The former No. 1 is appearing for the third straight year in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue this week, and she’s now reached the finals in Doha after winning two matches earlier on Friday.
Due to rains, which interrupted play again Friday, some players like the Dane were forced to double up, and Wozniacki didn’t miss a beat knocking out American qualifier Lauren Davis 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and then dominating Monica Puig 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.
“It’s been a great week, really tough conditions with all the waiting, but I managed to keep focus and play some of my best tennis out there.”
Karolina Pliskova also had to win two matches. The Czech who made the finals at the US Open finished off Shuai Zhang 6-2, 6-0 then went the distance in a 21-ace effort over Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
“Well, first one I started at 12:30,” Pliskova said of her day. “Then I was waiting till, I don’t know. We went on the court for two games, but I finished at like 7:30 or something. Was a few hours between the first set and second set in the first match. Then I had an hour after the first one that I won.”
Pliskova is now 14-1 on the season after the victory.
Wozniacki, a 2011 finalist in Doha, had beaten Pliskova in all three previous attempts, though all have gone three sets and their last meeting took place back at 2014 Istanbul.
“She’s playing really well, serving really well. It’s going to be a great final and I’m excited for it,” Wozniacki said.
“I don’t want to jinx anything, so let’s just hope there’ll be good weather. I’m just excited to be on the court, and if I have to wait a little bit, I’m used to it by now and I’m feeling good!”
Pliskova is seeking her second WTA title of the 2017 season after Brisbane and her eighth career singles title
overall while Wozniacki is bidding to win her 26th career singles title and first since Hong Kong last October.
