The Ice Queen Is Back! Maria Sharapova Zings Caroline Wozniacki At US Open

Earlier in the week, Caroline Wozniacki questioned why the US Open would put a doper on Arthur Ashe stadium over top seeds such as herself.

“When you look on centre court, I understand completely the business side of things but someone who comes back from a drugs sentence and performance-enhancing drugs,” Wozniacki said Wednesday after a late night loss to Ekatarina Makarova. “And all of a sudden gets to play every single match on centre court, I believe is a questionable thing to do. I think it doesn’t set a good example.”

The quote got a lot of attention and Sharapova even heard it. So after her win last night over Sofia Kenin, Sharapova hit back at the Dane who is no longer in the event.

“With regards to scheduling, as you know, I don’t make the schedule,” Sharapova responded. “I’m a pretty big competitor. If you put me out in the parking lot of Queens in New York City, I’m happy to play there. That’s not what matters to me. All that matters to me is I’m in the fourth round. Yeah, I’m not sure where she is.”

I’m in the fourth round, where is she? Zing!

Sharapova is correct that she is not in charge of the schedule. And in the past, Wozniacki has been scheduled on center court when her ranking didn’t quite warrant it.

Since returning from her 15-month, Sharapova has been on better behavior, but not anymore. The ice queen is back!

Sharapova is also back on court tomorrow to take on Sevasatova.

Got to feel for Wozniaki, I take her point. It does seem like the event organisers did this on purpose; pretty disrespectful, but Sharapova, she has served her time.

Don’t think these two will be besties any time soon. :-(

James Says:

Russian doper. Not the first one. Will not be the last.

RZ Says:

Maria was just saying last month that she’s always been “generous” with her critics. Still disagree with her on that theory.

But I also think Wozniacki should have let it go and not complained about it. The issue of Maria’s court assignments is a moot point. They gave her a wild card, which means they are okay with her playing.

obiedobie Says:

Awww, poor widda PrinCESS Caroline–the second most inadequate and unqualified woman ever to get the #1 ranking in women’s tennis–is all butthurt because Sharapova, who has one of each of the Slams Wozziepoo never could and never will win, is back? Suck it up, PrinCESS. You’re a journeyman who won mostly mid-level B and C tournaments without most of the top players in attendance, and you’ve never had the game to win Slams or be a true champion.

Leo Says:

Oh Caro! Why do you give someone a stick to hit you with?

1. You lost in the 2nd round.
2. The same day you were out on Ct 17, Bouchard-Rodina played on AA and Kvitova (a 2 time slam winner), was on tiny Ct 13. Your gripe seems to be more about Maria than it is about scheduling in general.

Less obsession over Maria and more obsession over your own results, pls.

Caroline has been one of the most vocal players against Maria. Let’s get real. Caroline has never liked Maria (which is fine), and found her chance to trash her at every opportunity since Maria was suspended due to her drug test. Maria is a born competitor. I seriously doubt she took the medication to get an edge. One thing Maria does not need is an edge. She is a born competitor. She made a mistake and paid her dues…. nobody suffered as much as she did. I find it interesting the 3 most vocal girls against Maria are Genie Bouchard (who can’t seem to make it past the first round these days. (Anyone remember Melanie Oudin???), Dominika Cibulkova who is green with envy and Caroline. I was shocked that Andy Murray was so vocal as well. Maria paid her dues and she deserves to be back

James Says:

Sharapova consumed the banned drug for many years, won slams on that drug, built up a fortune – got banned for 15 months in her twilight years, no she didn’t pay her dues.

James Says:

Like they do with Olympic medals – they should take away titles won on that drug. Then we can talk about dues.
