The 26-year-old No. 129-ranked Basic upset a returning-from-injury Stan Wawrinka in the semifinals.

In the third set of the championship match Basic broke at 4-4 before serving it out.

“I’m very happy for breaking through after the match yesterday [against Wawrinka],” Basic said afterwards. “After this week I will finally get in the Top 100. [After] this win, Sofia will always be my special place.”

Basic has reached the quarters or better in his last three ATP 250-level events, each time as a qualifier.

The 27-year-old Copil of Romania was appearing in his first career final.
