Former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and former world No. 2s Svetlana Kuznetsova and Agnieszka Radwanska are the leading favorites on paper this week in Istanbul, but all face early-round challenges at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup.
ADHEREL
TEB BNP PARIBAS ISTANBUL CUP
ISTANBUL, Turkey; surface: clay

Seeds: Caroline Wozniacki, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Agnieszka Radwanska, Zhang Shuai, Ekaterina Makarova, Sorana Cirstea, Irina-Camelia Begu, Aryna Sabalenka

Floaters: Sara Errani, Kirsten Flipkens, Donna Vekic, Qiang Wang

Notes:

The former No. 1 Wozniacki is the lone Top 10 and Top 25 player in the field…

Interesting starts for (1) Woz 2nd rd. vs. the Errani/Flipkens winner, the struggling (3) Radwanska vs. the riser Vekic, and the back-from-injury (2) Kuznetsova vs. Wang who she has struggled against in past encounters…

All-Turkey wildcards went to Ayla Aksu, Cagla Buyukakcay and Ipek Oz…

Pulling out of the field were Naomi Osaka, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Kateryna Kozlova and Tatjana Maria…

Elina Svitolina beat Elise Mertens in last year’s final…

Former winners in the field are Buyukakcay (2016), Wozniacki (2014), and Radwanska (2008).

Dearest Mira Andi and Margot,

Tenngrand WTA page is a spooky place — obviously hacked and so I try here to communicate. Would love to hear your thoughts about Istanbul and Stuttgart.

I think I’m going to be cautious of the Weekend Fed Cup players that expended too much energy. How much is too much? I don’t know.

Wozniacki should win Istanbul by a mile. That’s my common sense winner pick. lol, I think common sense hasn’t much to do with picking a winner!

Sabelenka – she’s fighting hard for Belarus vs Slovakia – might not take her far. But picking Sakkari, though she played for Greece — it was an easy win over Luxembourg

Stuttgart – Picking names out of a hat works. Very confusing on the heels of Germany vs Czech R. and the other Fed Cup warriors.

There might be a name that stands out because they are rested and prepared, like Elina Svitolina. Caroline Garcia too was strangely missing from the French Davis Cup team. She has perhaps a tough first round vs Sharapova. Who is the pick there.

Mladenovic is in Stuttgart but she’s playing her heart out this weekend.

Yeah…..Stuttgart I don’t know. Istanbul I could rattle off in 10 minutes. hahaha not that me bracket any good but just easier with Woz.

Hey j!…I don’t know whether you’re already read my reply to u on another WTA thread…But,i give some of my thoughts on Stuttgart there..

For me,even tho Istanbul lack of the big names unlike Stuttgart..only Caro,Aga & Kuzy make an appearance there..but..oh boy!..i still surrounded by stars from the start to finish to pick for my Bracket!!Hahaha..So many dilema!..I mean Caro even tho she’s the top seed but not once she play on any leading tourney on clay!…The last time she played was in Miami..and she already lost in 2nd rd!..My guts saying that not famous name will win in Istanbul..Just have to figure out who!hahaha…

As for Stuttgart…I really think Petra & Svitolina r the highest candidates to win..Tho,Maria too maybe have a say on it..She went to Rd 4 last year..But God!…so manyyyyy good players have to battle in the early stages!Sooo confusing!
