Muguruza Withdraws From San Jose; Stephens Washes Out In Washington
San Jose top seed Garbine Muguruza withdrew ahead of her match Wednesday night against Victoria Azarenka due to a right arm injury.
“I’ve been feeling some pain in my right arm for a couple of days and realized I am not ready to play the match, so hopefully I can recover for the next tournaments,” Muguruza said.
Instead of the Spaniard, Azarenka met lucky loser Anna Blinkova and rolled losing just one game.
Elise Mertens was also a winner.
Today, Venus Williams opens play against Heather Watson and Madison Keys clashed with Ajla Tomljanovic.
In Washington, reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens fell to former Top 10 Andrea Petkovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Since making the final at the French Open, Stephens has lost three of her last four matches.
