Medvedev, Zverev Advance To Shanghai Final
The two youngest Masters champions will collide in the Shanghai final Sunday in China. Daniil Medvedev kept his hot streak going besting Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(5), 7-5 to reach his sixth straight tournament final.
Medvedev won a tight first set then managed to recover in the second after failing to serve it out at 5-4.
“Making six in a row, including three Masters 1000’s and one Grand Slam, is something I could never dream of, to be honest,” said Medvedev. “But I want to keep the momentum going and hope I can make it to seven or eight.”
The Russian has now won 28 of his last 31 matches including two titles in this run that innocently began with the Washington title in July.
Tsitsipas, who stunned Novak Djokovic a day earlier, falls to 0-5 against Medvedev.
“To be honest, I really felt good today and I felt like I could win this match. I felt good, actually. I didn’t feel bad,” Tsitsipas said. “Today I actually felt the most comfortable among the other times that I played against him. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to beat him the next time or the time after that one, but I know there’s going to be a time where I’m going to find opportunities and beat him. I don’t know when it’s going to come. Probably two, three, four, five, six years’ time, I don’t know, but it’s going to come at some point.”
Medvedev will meet Alexander Zverev who raced past US Open semifinalist Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-4 to reach his first final since May in Geneva.
“It feels great, obviously. I felt like I’ve played some decent tennis this week and being in a Masters 1000 final here in Shanghai is also something very special for me,” said Zverev, who will face in-form Russian Daniil Medvedev for the title. “I’m looking forward to it and hopefully I can play some good tennis tomorrow.”
Zverev, who will seek a 4th Masters title, has won all four meetings with Medvedev.
“We’ve played some fantastic matches, all going my way until now. I hope tomorrow that will not change. But he’s been playing some fantastic tennis, sixth final in a row, US Open finalist, won Cincinnati,” said Zverev. “He’s probably the best player in the world right now. I hope it’s just going to be a good match tomorrow.”
