No. 1 Barty, Four Former Champions Featured In Doha; Halep Withdraws
World No. 1 Ash Barty joins four former champions in a deep field in Doha. The tournament will be without 2014 winner Simona Halep pulled out after her big title in Dubai Saturday.
Without Halep, the tournament still boasts six in the Top 10 and the last four champions: 2019 Elise Mertens, 2018 Petra Kvitova, 2018 Karolina Pliskova, 2017 Carla Suarez Navarro.
Former finalists Jelena Ostapaneko and Garbine Muguruza are also in the 56-player field along with Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, rising star Elena Rybakina, American sensation Amanda Anisimova and former Top 5s Vera Zvonareva and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The top seed Barty is making her Dubai debut. After a bye she will face Laura Siegemund who beat Yaroslava Shvedova Sunday.
With play already underway, the quarterfinal projections are: Barty-Kenin, Pliskova-Kvitova, Svitolina-Bencic, Bertens-Sabalenka.
Last year, Mertens topped Halep for her biggest career win.
