Former champion Simona Halep withdrew from Indian Wells yesterday. The 2015 winner cited an ongoing foot issue.

“I’m incredibly disappointed to have to withdraw from the 2020 BNP Paribas Open. Unfortunately the foot injury that I picked up before Dubai is still causing me trouble and I will be unable to recover in time to travel to Indian Wells,” Halep said.

Halep had just won the Dubai title a few weeks ago but then withdrew from Doha.

Also pulling out were 2-time champion Victoria Azarenka and 2019 runner-up Angelique Kerber.

Azarenka, who won the 2012 and 2016 titles, withdrew due to undisclosed reasons. Kerber cited a leg issue which will also force her out of Miami.
