Still hampered by a sore right shoulder, Maria Sharapova will miss the Indian Wells tournament next month.

Sharapova, who twice won Indian Wells most recently in 2013, has made just one final since returning from her drug ban nearly two years ago. And this season, her injuries woes have continued with a thigh issue in Shenzhen and then she had to withdraw mid-event from St. Petersburg.

She also is not playing Doha nor Dubai but remains entered into Miami. And she didn’t play after the US Open last year.

Sharapova turns 32 in April and it’s fair to wonder who much longer she will keep playing especially given the concerns over her right shoulder which just has never been the same since surgery in 2008.

Despite all the woes, she ranks in the Top 30 at No. 27 this week.

SG1 Says:

Have to wonder how much the right shoulder hurt her over her career. She served much better before the injury. I believe that her record against Serena would be a little bit less lopsided if her shoulder was okay. For a tennis player, a serious shoulder injury is about as bad a thing as you can have. They never heal up the way you want them to and the shoulder joint is so complex that most surgeons advise against shoulder surgery unless there’s no other option.
