For the second time in the event, Rafael Nadal had to come from a set to beat a countryman at the Paris Masters this week.

Nadal, who had to fight past Feliciano Lopez in his opener, also dropped the first set today to Pablo Carreno Busta before getting into gear late in the second for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

“I have to give him a lot of credit that he did a lot of things very well, played very aggressively,” Nadal said. “I need to return better. My serve is working well, I think, so the rest of the game more or less I am playing better and better. I need to return better if I want to have chances to keep going.”

Nadal took 8 of the last 9 games to advance to the semifinals where he’ll meet Alexander Zverev. The German prevailed over Stan Warwinka 6-3, 7-6(1). Wawrinka served for the second set but Zverev was up to the challenge.

Nadal leads Zverev 5-1.

Carreno Busta’s gave the final berth at the ATP Finals to Diego Schwartzman. The Argentine was blown out by Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-1 but Carreno Bust was the last man who had a chance to overtake Schwartzman for the last spot.

The 28-year-old Schwartzman is the first Argentine player to qualify for the ATP Finals since Juan Martin Del Potro in 2013.

Medvedev moves on to face Milos Raonic who saved two match points in a spirited win over Ugo Humbert Ugo Humbert 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7), ending the Frenchman’s seven match win streak.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say that that match point is the way I want to be playing too many points that I saved in that long rally,” Raonic said. “But I just tried to stick with it as much as possible, tried to find a way through and got a bit fortunate, hit a few balls close to the line.

“Today it turned my way, but I’ve just got to keep plugging away. Doesn’t necessarily mean it always will, but at least give it a chance for it to turn around.”

Medvedev leads Raonic 2-0 in their series.
