Medvedev Eyes Miami Masters, Return To No. 1; Hurkacz Defends Title; Kyrgios Opens Wed.
After a disappointing result at Indian Wells, Daniil Medvedev hopes to makes things right in Miami this week.
The Russian can return to No. 1 with a strong performance but he’s never advanced past the quarterfinals in Florida.
Medvedev could meet Andy Murray in the third round with either defending champion Hubert Hurkacz or Denis Shapovalov in the quarters.
Former semifinalist Felix Auger Aliassime could run into Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second quarter. However there’s a going chance that meeting will be spoiled. The blossoming Carlos Alcaraz could meet Tsitsipas in the fourth round while FAA could face Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz, Karen Khachanov or in his opener either Miomir Kecmanovic or Jack Sock.
In a loaded third quarter, a number of players could emerge with the in-form Andrey Rublev, Matteo Berrettini, Gael Monfils, Reilly Opelka and 2021 finalist Jannik Sinner. Rublev could meet Nick Kyrgios in his opener. The Australian faces the tough Adrian Mannarino in action on Wednesday.
Former finalist Alexander Zverev anchors the bottom quarter, but the German is just 3-2 in his last five matches — not including a default — and with his off court issues, it’s unclear where his head will be. Looking to take advantage will be former champion and finalist John Isner, Casper Ruud, Cameron Norrie, Grigor Dimitrov and Diego Schwartzman. If Zverev is on song, it’s his quarter by a large margin.
Tomorrow, the men’s event begins with play from Kyrgios, Brandon Nakashima, Maxime Cressy and Mackenzie McDonald.
