Taylor Fritz of the USA clinched the inaugural United Cup with a thrilling 7-6(4), 7-6(6) over Matteo Berrettini of Italy. In this battle of big servers, Fritz finished with 15 aces to Berrettini’s seven. But despite missing on nine break chances, Fritz proved better in the breaker.
“It’s great. It’s amazing for the team to win this event. We came in with really high hopes, or at least I did, for the event,” said Fritz who never faced a break point. “I was really happy to be in that position to clinch the match.”
Frances Tiafoe and Jessica Pegula both were early winners on Sunday to put the USA up 2-0. Tiafoe earned a second set retirement from Lorenzo Musetti who struggled with a shoulder issue. And Madison Keys won a dead rubber after Fritz. Overall, the USA finished 22-2 in match play.
“Seeing these guys do their thing, it’s special,” said Tiafoe. “Seeing Fritz the last couple days play — can’t lose a tiebreaker, it’s insane. Seeing Jessica give an absolute lesson to the World No.1 is crazy. Madison winning a huge match to get us over the line the other day against Great Britain, it’s just crazy.”
Tiafoe went 5-0 during the week, Pegula 4-1.
“It’s been amazing to spend time with these guys and start the year like this,” said Pegula. “It’s been super fun and already super memorable.”
