Kudermetova Edges Krejcikova In Doha Thriller; Sakkari, Kvitova Tuesday
In first round action Monday at WTA Doha, No. 8 Veronika Kudermetova won a thriller over former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7-5).
The Russian led 3-1 in the third before needing a final breaker to advance.
In the match, Kudermetova hit seven aces, donated three doubles, won 57/77 (74%) of first service points, 18/41 (44%) on second serves, was 2 of 11 on break chances and faced 10 break chances.
Both players finished a combined 4 of 21 on break points.
Kudermetova is a perfect 2-0 in tour-level head-to-head battles with Krejcikova.
Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka had a comfortable win over Ipek Oz 6-1, 6-1. Karolina Muchova enjoyed an easy victory over Italy’s Martina Trevisan 6-2, 6-2 in the only other main draw singles match.
