Gasquet Upsets Carreno Busta In Rotterdam, Wawrinka Wins; Tsitsipas, FAA Tomorrow
French veteran Richard Gasquet toppled the 7th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta 2-6, 7-6(7-2), 6-2 in the first round of play in Rotterdam. The 36-year-old Gasquet cracked 13 aces in the win, his first ever against the Spaniard.
Carreno Busta continues a trend of losing leads. Today the 31-year-old led 6-2, 4-2 before things fell apart. In three tour-level meetings, Carreno Busta is still ahead of Gasquet 2-1.
Former finalist Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria easily handled Russia’s Aslan Karatsev 6-1, 6-3. Gregoire Barrere defeated David Goffin in two sets 6-0, 7-6(7-3), and Stan Wawrinka moved past Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik 7-6(7-5), 6-4.
Tuesday’s line-up includes a huge line-up featuring No. 1 Stefanos Tsitsipas – Emil Ruusuvuori, No. 3 Felix Auger-Aliassime – Lorenzo Sonego, Roberto Bautista Agut – No. 5 Hubert Hurkacz, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina – No. 6 Daniil Medvedev plus No. 8 Alexander Zverev – Soon Woo Kwon.
Auger-Aliassime is making his title defense debut.
