In Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Argentina Open had plenty of upsets and intense matches on Tuesday. In the first round action, the 5th-seeded Francisco Cerundolo battled against Yannick Hanfmann in a thrilling three-setter, ultimately coming out on top 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Cerundolo’s aggressive play saw him tally four aces and win 61% of his first serve points, while also breaking Hanfmann’s serve five times. Although Hanfmann put up a tough fight and broke Cerundolo three times, it wasn’t enough to secure the win. In the end, it was Cerundolo’s resilience and determination that helped him take the victory.

The match came to a nail-biting conclusion when Cerundolo broke Hanfmann’s serve in the twelfth game of the third set, securing his place in the second round. This was the first tour-level meeting between the two players, and Cerundolo was undoubtedly pleased to have come out on top.

In other matches, there were plenty of upsets as Dusan Lajovic upset 6th-seeded Sebastian Baez in three sets 3-6, 7-6(7-5), 6-3, and Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain stunned the 8th-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas in two sets 7-5, 6-4. It was clear that the competition was fierce, and any player could come out on top.

Two-time tournament champion Dominic Thiem collected his first win of the season topping Alex Molchan 7-6(4), 6-3.

“It was a good match,” said Thiem to the ATP. “I like it a lot here in Buenos Aires. Already the last days in practice I was feeling well.

“I won my first match of the season against a very good opponent. I stayed focused throughout the whole match, as well in the difficult moments. So I’m happy and I’m trying to focus fully on the second round now.”

Wednesday’s slate promises more intense matches, including a highly anticipated match between Laslo Djere and No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, and No. 2 Cameron Norrie’s match against Facundo Diaz Acosta.

The 19-year-old Alcaraz will make his 2023 debut after a leg injury forced his withdrawal from Australia.
