Just two more days are left at the first Masters event of the 2023 season at Indian Wells where someone on Sunday walks away with their first title in the desert. In fact, there will be two new finalists doing battle for the championships.

Daniil Medvedev remains the favorite. The Russian has won his last three tournaments and 18 straight matches. He’s overcome a right ankle turn and a cut finger and tomorrow takes on Frances Tiafoe who he has defeated in all four meetings.

“I’m sure Frances is feeling great right now and playing great,” Medvedev said Wednesday. “I feel great, and hopefully I can continue this way this season, because it’s been a long time I haven’t felt this way.”

Tiafoe rolls into his first Masters semifinal without dropping a set.

“I think getting three solid wins before today comfortably, you know, I have a lot in the tank,” Tiafoe said after his win over Cameron Norrie.

“I think every win builds more and more confidence, get more and more comfortable.”

While the first semifinal pits the guile of Medvedev against the power of Tiafoe, the second semifinal is all power as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner resume their budding rivalry.

The two last met in the match of the year at the US Open in September.

The two have split four meetings with Alcaraz leading 2-0 on hard courts, Sinner up 2-0 on natural surfaces.

“I love playing really tough matches,” Alcaraz said of facing Sinner. “Close matches, matches with high quality. I love playing that kind of matches. Jannik is a great player. Great ball striker, as well. So I love every match that I played against him.

“I have to be really, really focused in every shot. I have to play my best. That’s why Jannik is such a great player, as well. Not only with great serve, great movements, it is because he pushed to the opponent to the limit, you know. Trying to play aggressive with great shots. And to the opponent is really tough to be focused, you know, mentally and physically during the whole match.”

Alcaraz is now just two wins from returning to No. 1.
