After a disappointing French Open, Jannik Sinner got off to a good start on the Grass in Den Bosch thumping the dangerous Alexander Bublik 6-4, 6-2.

Sinner hit eight aces, dropped just five points on first serve and never was broken.

“Against him it is never easy to play,” Sinner said to the ATP. “He serves very good, he can play every kind of shot, so I had to be very careful. From my side, I think I served well in important moments. For me this is a special tournament, because in 2019 I won my first match on grass here, and obviously the support [here] is always very nice… It means a lot.”

Sinner made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year losing a tough match with Novak Djokovic.

“I’ve grown up, but I’m still young,” said Sinner. “I learned many things. My position is very different, much better, but I know that I can still improve a lot. Every match I try to play my level, try to improve and obviously I am trying to go as far as possible.”

American Mackenzie McDonald had the big upset knocking out 3rd-seeded Borna Coric 6-4, 6-4. The 28-year-old McDonald lost just six points on first serve in the match. He’s now 2-0 against the Croat.

Also, Emil Ruusuvuori upended 7th-seeded Ugo Humbert in three 6-2, 6-7(6-8), 6-4.And Rinky Hijikata got past Marc-Andrea Huesler 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Tomorrow, second round play continues with No. 1 Daniil Medvedev colliding with Adrian Mannarino. The lefty Mannarino leads 3-2 but Medvedev was victorious in their last battle here in the last semifinals last year en route to the final.

No. 4 Alex De Minaur will meet Laslo Djere, No. 6 Tallon Griekspoor tests Alexei Popyrin and Milos Raonic resumes his comeback against Jordan Thompson.
