Wawrinka Eyes First Title In 6 Years, Faces Popyrin In Umag
At 38, Stan Wawrinka will seek his first title in more than six years Sunday in the final of the clay event in Umag.
The Swiss 3-time Grand Slam winner advanced to his first final since 2019 Saturday defeating second-seeded Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-4.
In the match, Wawrinka had five aces, won 27/32 (84%) first serve points, lost only 5 points on first serve and never dropped his serve in this first time meeting.
“I’m happy with the match. I think I played really well, the best match of the week,” Wawrinka said to the ATP. “I’m really happy to be in the final tomorrow.”
Wawrinka advances his 31st career final. He is eyeing his 17th career title, first since 2017 in Geneva where he topped Alexander Zverev. It’s Wawrinka’s first final since 2019 Antwerp. Sonego was bidding his 6th career final.
Alexei Popyrin will await Wawrinka in the final. The 23-year-old Australian ousted 7th-seeded Matteo Arnaldi 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-3 to reach his second career final, after winning in 2021 Singapore.
Wawrinka and Popyrin have never met before.
