Evans Completes Incredible Week With Washington Title Over Griekspoor
Dan Evans completed the week of his life topping Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 6-3 to win his first ATP 500-level title in Washington.
The match was interrupted by rain for over two hours with the score knotted at 2-all in the second set. But when they came back, Evans was still the better player.
Evans never lost serve and broke the Dutchman twice, to win the first and again to go up 5-3 in the second. Griekspoor missed on four chances to stay alive at 5-3 in the second but Evans was about to close the door.
The 33-year-old Evans took just his second career ATP title after the Murray River in Australia a few years ago. He’ll have Canadian Open semifinal points coming off next week, so this will help!
Evans came into the week having lost eight of his last nine matches overall, but turned it around pulling upsets over home favorite Frances Tiafoe and then Grigor Dimitrov before the win today. Evans lost the first set of the event he played to Gregoire Barrere then won 10 straight. He now leads Griekspoor 3-0 in their head-to-head.
Griekspoor was seeking his third career title and third of the season. He suffered his first loss in a final.
