Azaranka Advances, Pliskova Upset, Players Withdraw At WTA 1000 Guadalajara

Day two at the WTA 1000 level event in Guadalajara saw two former Grand Slam winners advance.

Victoria Azarenka rolled past American Robin Montgomery 6-1, 6-1. The 34-year-old Azarenka lost just one point on first serve. Fellow Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin cruised past Canadian qualifier Carol Zhao 6-4, 6-3.

Former No. 1 Karolina Pliskova fell in the match of the day, losing a 5-2 third set lead and match point to young American Hailey Baptiste 7-6(5), 5-7, 7-6(4).

Pliskova held match point at 5-3 before the 21-year-old came back in 2 hours, 49 minutes.

Seventh-seeded Veronika Kudermetova advanced past 29-year-old Eugenie Bouchard in three 6-2, 6-7(4-7), 6-4.

Belinda Bencic had to withdraw due to a stomach illness while Beatriz Haddad Maia had to pull out after getting cut in the shower.

Colombia’s Emiliana Arango bounced No. 11 seed Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 6-3. The Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk eliminated Stacey Fung of Canada 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. Camila Giorgi of Italy upended the 14th-seeded Mayar Sherif 7-5, 6-3.

Sachia Vickery advanced when Danielle Collins withdrew with a back injury down 7-6(9-7).

Martina Trevisan upset 15th-seeded countrywoman Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-2. Caroline Dolehide battled past compatriot Peyton Stearns in a match that went the distance 6-7(1-7), 7-6(7-5), 7-6(7-2). Emma Navarro enjoyed an easy win over Maria Mateas 6-0, 6-4. Magdalena Frech routed Camila Osorio 6-1, 6-2. and Storm Hunter overcame Iryna Shymanovich 6-3, 6-4.

On Tuesday, the higher seeds take the court and that includes No. 1 Ons Jabeur locking up with Alycia Parks for a third time. Jabeur leads 2-0.

No. 2 Maria Sakkari will meet Hunter in a first-time tour-level meeting. No. 3 Caroline Garcia tests Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Garcia leads 5-0.

No. 4 Madison Keys battles Navarro, No. 6 Jelena Ostapenko collides with Kostyuk, No. 8 Ekaterina Alexandrova faces Frech, Azarenka gets Dayana Yastremska, No. 12 Anhelina Kalinina clashes with Kenin, and No. 13 Elise Mertens faces Leylah Fernandez.
