Jabeur Crashes Out Of Guadalajara, Sakkari Advances; Garcia v Azarenka QF
Martina Trevisan needed a few minutes over three hours to finally put away top seed Ons Jabeur 6-7(4-7), 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals at the WTA 1000 level event in Guadaljara.
The loud lefty Trevisan finished was 6 of 11 on break chances while saving 13 of 17 break points faced in the big win.
In the third, Trevisan got on top 4-2 before Jabeur broke back. But Trvisan continued to break trend for 5-3 and then held for the big win.
Second-seeded Maria Sakkari had better luck against Italian opposition. The Greek scored an easier-than-expected victory over the dangerous Italian Camila Giorgi in straights 6-2, 6-2.
“It’s always very tricky to play Camila, because she’s a very aggressive player,” Sakkari said. “I’m very happy to be back in the quarterfinals here.”
In the match, Sakkari finished with four aces, lost only 9 points on first serve and was 6 of 8 on break chances,
The 3rd-seeded Caroline Garcia ousted American Hailey Baptiste 7-5, 6-4. Garcia connected on seven aces and was a perfect 4-for-4 on break chances,
Tenth-seeded Victoria Azarenka is next for Garcia. The 2-time Slam winner knocked out the 7th-seeded Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-1.
In a battle of 1-time Slam winners, Sofia Kenin bounced the 6th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. Caroline Dolehide upset No. 8 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 6-2. Leylah Fernandez sent out Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-3 and new Colombian star Emiliana Arango won a tight one over Taylor Townsend 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
With all the upsets and withdrawals, just three of the Top 50 players reached the quarterfinals of this 1000 event — 9 Sakkari, 11 Garcia and 23 Azarenka.
On Thursday, quarterfinal play gets underway with Sakkari taking on the 180th-ranked Arango.
Garcia has won three of four tour-level meetings when facing Azarenka. Azarenka was victorious in their last collision back at 2020 Cincinnati.
Kenin takes on Fernandez and Trevisan meets Dolehide.
