A rough round-robin event of the WTA Finals somehow only got worse for knock-out semifinal day Saturday as the weather prevented the completion of the matches and forced the event to have to finish a day later on Monday.

Jessica Pegula pounded friend and doubles partner Coco Gauff 6-2, 6-1 in a blowout to reach her biggest career final.

“I’m happy to have won, I did a good job today. I am undefeated in Mexico, I don’t know why, maybe it feels a little familiar to me, here the conditions remind me a little of where I live, I think the courts favor me, plus I like tacos, margaritas,” said Pegula who is now 4-0 this year (8-0 in sets in singles).

Pegula raced out to the first seven points of the match in the gusty conditions to lead 2-0. Gauff would level but won manage just one more game from there as the match was interrupted by two rain delays.

Gauff falls to 0-3 against Pegula on hard courts.

“She was playing well with the wind, and I wasn’t,” Gauff said the WTA. “I mean we both had the same circumstances. She just handled them better than I did.”

Pegula will now await the winner between Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. The two had just started when one rain delay hit and then a second which ended the day with Swiatek up 2-1 on serve in the first set.

The two will finish their match Sunday with the winner to meet Pegula on a newly scheduled Monday final.

“I don’t think I consider myself the favorite, considering the two girls are ranked ahead of me. I’ll probably be considered the underdog, even though I’m playing great tennis,” Pegula said.

Pegula and Gauff are also still in the doubles round robin. They’ll finish that tomorrow and then play the doubles semifinal and the final. So Pegula could have to play up to three doubles matches on Sunday.

The forecast does call for better weather on Sunday.
