Robin Soderling Wins First Tennis Masters – Interviews, Highlights [Video]
Congratulations to Robin Soderling and his supporters. Soderling dashed the hopes of local favorite Gael Monfils by beating the Frenchman 61, 76 to capture the BNParibas Tennis Masters in Paris.
Soderling dropped just one set the entire week which included three saved match points in his semifinal thriller over Michael Llodra.
It was his first career Tennis Masters title for Soderling who was a two-time runner-up in Paris at the French Open. In the interview, the Swede admits to feeling more nervous today than he did in those two French finals.
“It feels great,” said Soderling. “I don’t have a very good record in finals, and especially here in Paris. I lost two finals at Roland Garros. Of course it’s great to reach the final in a Grand Slam and also in a Masters 1000, but I think a final is that one match you really want to win. I’m really happy that I played well today, and now I’m here winning the title.
“When I won that last point, I just felt so happy and I felt so relieved. I really wanted to win this match so much.”
Monfils ended his season like he did last year by losing in the Paris final, but Gael did enjoy a career win yesterday over Roger Federer.
While Monfils’ season is over Soderling now goes to London where he’ll against be someone to watch for on the fast indoor surface.
