Russian No. 3 seed Tatiana Panova was a seeded upset victim on day one at the WTA stop in Hyderabad, India, dismissed in straight sets by Israel's Shahar Peer.

"The break point in the fifth game of the first set gave me the confidence that I can win," Peer said. "I knew that to win I would have to make her run around."

Two other two seeds moved comfortably into the second round in straight sets in (4) Jie Zheng (d. Voskoboeva) and (9) Alyona Bondarenko (d. Bhambri).

Hyderabad, a tour-level event, had no players within the Top 50 as of the entry deadline.

Other unseeded winners into the second round Monday were Roberta Vinci (d. Salerni), Marie-Eve Pelletier (d. Bychkova in three), Tian Tian Sun (d. Nemeckova), and Tzipora Obziler (d. (7) Kurhajcova).
