Gaudio in 3rd Final in 3 Weeks at ATP Kitzbuhel
Posted on July 31, 2005Former French Open winner Gaston Gaudio reached his third consecutive final in three weeks on Sunday at the ATP claycourt stop in Kitzbuhel, reaching the championship match Saturday with a 6-1, 6-1 dismatling of unseeded Mariano Zabaleta.
"I came here to see if I could win some points and now I'm in the final," Gaudio said. "Tomorrow's another match and I'll try do as well as possible."
Standing in the Argentine's way in the final will be unseeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, who upset No. 7 seed and last year's Olympic gold medalist Nicolas Massu 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
"This is my third year here," Verdasco said. "In the first year I lost 7-6, 7-6 to Juan Carlos Ferrero but I realized that I can play very good here. Last year I made the semifinals. For me this is one of the most special tournaments of the year."
The only time Gaudio and Verdasco have faced each other was in last year's Kitzbuehel semifinal, with Gaudio winning in straight sets.
The doubles final will be the unseeded Rochus brothers, Christophe and Olivier in their first final together, against the winner of Arnold/Puerta and Friedl/Pavel.
