Nadal, Coria, Ferrero Into ATP Beijing SemisPosted on September 16, 2005 An all-star line-up advanced into the semifinals Friday at the ATP stop in Beijing, the China Open, in top-seeded Spaniard and current French Open holder Rafael Nadal, No. 2 seed and former French Open runner-up Guillermo Coria, No. 4 seed and former Australian Open winner Thomas Johansson, and No. 6 seed and former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Nadal and Coria were forced to perform double duty after Thursday's rain-out, with Nadal coming from a set down to defeat unseeded American Justin Gimelstob then Dutchman Peter Wessels in straight sets, and Coria straight-setting lucky loser Toshihide Matsui before edging No. 7 Mikhail Youzhny in three. Johansson advanced into the semis with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over No. 8 Carlos Moya, while Ferrero defeated No. 3 David Nalbandian 6-3 in the third. "I got frustrated in the tiebreak and I think that was the turning point of the set and the match," Moya said. "Until that moment I think the match was very open. In some moments I played very well and in others not so well, and it wasn't enough to get through." Matching up in the Saturday semifinals will be (2) Coria vs. (4) T.Johansson (Tojo won their only meeting at 2002 Miami), and (1) Nadal vs. (6) Ferrero (Nadal leads 3-0, all on clay). "He's playing very well and he has the confidence from winning tournaments on hard like in Montreal," Ferrero said of Nadal. "It will be first time I play him on hard, so it will be different for both of us. I'll try and do my best and play better than I have against him in the past, when I thought I had good chances to beat him." |
