Simon Beats Slumping Monaco at ATP BucharestPosted on September 12, 2006 Fourth-seeded Gilles Simon advanced to the second round of the BCR Open Romania by posting a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win over Juan Monaco Monday in Bucharest.
The 21-year-old Frenchman, who currently stands at a career-high INDESIT ATP Ranking of No.46, will be looking to reach the quarterfinals of an ATP event for the fourth time this season when he takes on the winner of Jurgen Melzer and a qualifier yet to be announced. Argentina's Martin Vassalo-Arguello also advanced to the second round by dismissing wild card Razvan Sabau 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. The 26-year-old is No.108 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings and has a record of 7-4 this season. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez defeated countryman Albert Montanes 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to win his first ATP match since Sopot in July. The 23-year-old holds a 12-15 record in 2005 having reached the semifinals in Delray Beach and quarterfinals at Estoril and Valencia. Also advancing to the second round was sixth-seeded Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo, who defeated wild card Victor Ionita 6-4, 6-4 to notch his 20th win in the season. Ramirez-Hidalgo, who reached the semifinals at Amersfoort and Vina del Mar, has wins over James Blake (New Haven), Guillermo Coria and Marat Safin (AMS Rome) this season. -- ATP |
