Robredo, Ancic, Berdych into Quarters at Mumbai Posted on September 29, 2006
The upsets were few on day four in Mumbai as the top four seeds all advanced to the quarterfinals. No. 1 seed Tommy Robredo led the way with a 1-hour, 51-minute win over German Michael Berrer 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The Spaniard will next battle Ramon Delgado, who advanced to the quarters after Argentine teen Juan Martin del Potro retired with an upset stomach when trailing 6-3, 4-1.
Second seed Mario Ancic had an easier time defeating Italian Stefano Galvani 6-1, 7-6(6) and in doing so advanced to his 10th ATP quarterfinal on the season.
After missing more than two months with back and knee injuries, Ancic returned to competition with a bang last week at Beijing where he reached the final falling to Marcos Baghdatis. Dating to June, Ancic has won 21 of his last 24 matches including the ATP title at 's-Hertogenbosch in June (d. Hernych) and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in July (l. to Federer).
No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych also won in straights ousting Germany's Simon Greul 7-6(4), 6-4. The Czech star will take on Bjorn Phau, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over qualifier Gouichi Motomura.
Also advancing to the quarters were No. 4 seed and Russian Davis Cup hero Dmitry Tursunov and qualifier James Auckland.
