Third seed Tomas Berdych had little difficulty in beating German Bjorn Phau at the expense of only five games. The 6-3, 6-2 victory was the young Czech's 42nd of the year -- double that of his losses.
Sixth-seeded Olivier Rochus of Belgium and Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand also advanced with wins over Americans. Rochus topped Vincent Spadea 6-3, 6-4, while Srichaphan downed Mardy Fish 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1.
Also, Swedish favorite and No. 8 seed Robin Soderling cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Belgian Christophe Rochus, and Frank Dancevic of Canada advanced to the second round by beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-4, 6-1.
"If I play at my best I can go all the way, if I don't play good enough I can be out in the next round so it's really just a question of one match at a time," Soderling said.
