No. 2 seed and 2005 finalist Tommy Robredo, No. 5 Richard Gasquet and No. 7 Agustin Calleri are the seeds in second round action on Thursday. In addition, local wild card Frederico Gil attempts to reach the Estoril Open quarterfinals for the second straight year.

In the first singles match on Centre Court, the 22-year-old Gil plays the highest-ranked opponent of his career against the No. 15th-ranked Gasquet. Last season Gil advanced to his first ATP quarterfinal with wins over David Luque and No. 33 Dmitry Tursunov before losing to eventual champion David Nalbandian. The 20-year-old Frenchman is 19-8 on the season and he is trying to reach his fifth ATP quarterfinal (or better). His best result was the semifinals in Sydney (l. to Moya).

In the next match on Centre Court, Calleri meets Argentine countryman Juan Martin del Potro for the second time this year. In January, Calleri won 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of Auckland. The 30-year-old is trying to advance to his fifth ATP quarterfinal (or better) this year. He comes in with a 13-7 match record. The 18-year-old del Potro is the youngest player in the Top 100 ATP Rankings at No. 63. His best result was the semifinals in Adelaide (l. to Guccione) in the first week of the season.

On Centralito Court, Robredo takes a 2-1 career advantage into the second round against countryman Alberto Martin. They met earlier this year and Robredo won 6-4, 6-2, in the second round of Auckland. Robredo is attempting to reach his fifth quarterfinal or better and he is 17-9 on the season. Martin qualified into the main draw and his best result is the quarterfinals in Valencia three weeks ago (l. to Ventura).

On Court 1, Frenchman Olivier Patience, a qualifier who upset top seed and No. 4 ranked Nikolay Davydenko in the first round, plays American Vincent Spadea for the first time. Patience is looking to reach his third career ATP quarterfinal or better. He was a quarterfinalist in Estoril three years ago and semifinalist in Costa do Sauipe last year. The 32-year-old Spadea is the oldest player remaining and he’s attempting to reach his fifth ATP quarterfinal (or better) of the season. His best result was the semifinals in Delray Beach in February (l. to eventual champ Malisse).
