Ferrer Upsets Djokovic; Federer, Roddick Up Monday at ATP Masters CupPosted on November 12, 2007 World No. 2 Rafael Nadal met expectations, and Spaniard David Ferrer pulled off a upset on the opening day at the Masters Cup on Sunday in Shanghai.
Nadal outlasted final-place No. 8-seeded qualifier Richard Gasquet of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Ferrer, the No. 6 seed, upset world No. 3 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4. "In the beginning, a little bit nervous," Nadal said. "Every match is very difficult because here you play only against the best. So I start the match with a little bit of doubt. But later I play a little bit more aggressive. I finished much better than I started." Djokovic complained of a throat ailment after the match. "Mentally I felt a bit more pressure than usual and obviously that had an effect on my game," Djokovic said. "It wasn't my day but of course this is sport. We all have to get used to the wins and the losses. I didn't play on the level I was supposed to play and the level I've played all year. I didn't cope with the pressure today." On Monday, world No. 1 Roger Federer opens his title defense against Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez, and Nikolay Davydenko faces American Andy Roddick in a possible preview of the U.S. vs. Russia Davis Cup final later this month. |
