Roddick Shuts Down Federer-less Switzerland in Davis Cup; Croatia Next

Posted on March 8, 2009

Andy Roddick reinforced his reputation as "The Closer" for the U.S. Davis Cup team, defeating a weary Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 as the U.S. closed out Switzerland in the fourth match in Davis Cup play.

Roddick is now 11-0 in Sunday Davis Cup matches when he has an opportunity to clinch the tie.

Wawrinka was playing for the third time in three days after defeating James Blake on Friday, and losing to the Bryan brothers on Saturday with partner Yves Allegro.

Switzerland was without world No. 2 Roger Federer, who opted out of the tie citing an injured back.

Next the U.S. will travel to Croatia in July to face Marin Cilic, Mario Ancic, Ivan Ljubicic and Ivo Karlovic in a big-serving contest.
