Jankovic Moves into US Open Quarterfinals; Federer Gets Stepanek Test Today

My new favorite women’s player, Jelena Jankovic, is already through today at the US Open. The Serb drama queen is the first player into the quarterfinals, and as long as she doesn’t win the title in NY I’ll be rooting for her and her quest to finish the year No. 1 without reaching the Slam final.

Roddick Recovers Against Gulbis at US Open; Nadal, Del Potro Playing Today

With a set in hand, serving 5-4 against Andy Roddick, Ernests Gulbis finally flinched. Gulbis never saw another lead again the rest of the match.

Roddick Soars, Jankovic Dragging at US Open

“I felt good, that’s the best I’ve played in four or five months,” Roddick said. “Something about this place always gets me energized and the fans are great and I’m just happy to be healthy.”

“I think it was a good match to start off with,” Federer said. “Never saw my opponent before. Never saw him play obviously because I never saw him. That was the tricky part. I thought the other guy played good for the pressure he was under.”

Thoughts on Tennis as the Olympic Games End and the US Open Begins

Elite tennis players have used a variety of stroke mechanics and tactics to succeed. Therefore, different physiques have been seen frequenting the winner’s circle in tennis. Boris Becker, Gustavo Kuerten, Jimmy Connors and Andre Agassi did not have similar body types, but each won a lot of big matches.

ATP Chairman de Villiers to Step Down, Men’s Tennis Search Begins

In the end, he operated so secretly from the players that Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic took the unprecedented action of electing themselves to the ATP Player Council to have a say in their sport. Apparently the last straw for de Villiers was the top players signing a petition that the ATP not automatically renew his contract for 2009, and shop around for other candidates.
