Serena Willams Might Open 2010 Tennis Season Against Henin in Sydney

The Sydney women’s draw was unveiled just a short while ago and after a first round by, top seed Serena Williams could very well be match up against former No. 1 Justine Henin. ADHEREL

Henin though must first get past Maria Jose Sanchez Martinez. If Henin wills she’ll set up a 14th career showdown with Serena.

Head-to-head in their rivalry Serena leads 7-6 winning the pairs most recent encounter in Miami 2008 6-2, 6-0.


But before then, Henin will play the finals of the Brisbane event later tonight against her countrywoman Kim Clijsters. This marks the 21st career WTA meeting between the two Belgians, who both were retired at this time a year ago.

The Sydney draw boasts seven of the top eight, including No. 2 seed Dinara Safina, No. 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki along with Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic and Victoria Azarenka.

As much as I like Henin, I hope Serena wins against Henin here should they face off, if not for anything else, than at least for the sake of silencing those who’re attributing Serena’s tremendous success in slams since Henin’s retirement to solely taking the advantage of Henin’s absence. It was never like Henin dominated Serena.

I thought she needed to…she got enough practice in brisbane. Good decision.
