Tennis-X Notes: Mirza Marriage, Kim Fed Cup Off
FAIL — India’s Sania Mirza, engaged to be married since last year, said she was giving up tennis after she got married. No word on giving up tennis, but she issued a media statement saying she has given up on the marriage. Mirza was engaged to family friend Sohrab Mirza last July, but the statement said they “found ourselves incompatible during our engagement period.” The two families discussed the matter beforehand and reportedly all is good. The first sign of trouble arose when Mirza, announcing she would quit tennis after getting married, told the press, “I would like to live with my husband, I think.” Apparently she has thought on it some more since then.
ADHEREL
Lacoste announced they signed No. 164-ranked Gaston Gaudio. Nice signing! As long as you don’t mind your player ever being on TV.
From Garry Norris writing for the Black Athlete Sports Network: “In retrospect, Serena should not have verbally attacked the female judge. Also it was clear that the WTA did not want another Williams to win the U.S. Open — and the WTA had the gall to have an Asian woman make the call so it would not look like racism…Asian Americans better wake up and stop doing the bidding of conservative white American Males…Look out Asian Americans you are next. Trust me let China get too politically powerful and economically strong. Then see how my white conservative brothers (Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Hannity and Beck) and sisters react.” — There is so much wrong here we’re not even going to touch it. Keep drinking the crazy juice Garry.
KIM-POSSIBLE FED CUP PULL — Kim Clijsters, after getting worked 6-0, 6-1 by Nadia Petrova at the Aussie Open, has joined compatriot Justine Henin in pulling from representing Belgium in Fed Cup versus Poland next month. Henin and Clijsters say the Feb. 6-7, 2010 tie is too soon in their respective comebacks, with Clijsters now saying she needs a “fresh period to build up training.”
