A hearty congratulations to Serbia for collecting its first Davis Cup title. The Serbs today whitewashed France in fine fashion with straight set sweeps by Novak Djokovic over Gael Monfils and then hero Victor Troicki who easily beat Michael Llodra.

The final score was Serbia 3, France 2!

“This was the greatest experience in my life,” Troicki told Daviscup.com. “I still don’t believe it. I mean, probably tomorrow or in the next few days I will start feeling the emotions of winning the Davis Cup.

“Seriously, I think we all did a great job this year. I would like to thank everyone, the whole team. We truly believed that we could do it, even though we were 2‑1 down.

“I’m without the words. This is the most easiest [way] to explain. I’m without the words. No words can describe my feeling right now.”

Serb No. 1 Djokovic was equally as thrilled.

“To be able to perform as well as we did today under the circumstances is just I think too good,” said Djokovic who didn’t drop a set in two singles wins. “In history, [this is] one of the best sport results this country ever had. This is by far individually and team the best achievements in our career by far.”

The team had promised to shave their heads if they won the Davis Cup. Well, I’ll let you be the judge if they lived up the their word!

Here’s the shocking video:

Now it’s Janko’s turn to get cropped (with some extra locker room footage and celebration):

Here’s video of the trophy presentation with the hairless team on the podium!

This article gives me goosebumps. Anyone with complaints about Novak’s attitude on court a few years ago needs to read this.

Fot, I think there’s some exos soon, no?

tennis coach Says:

Congratulations Serbian team! Job well done!

Kimmi Says:

” now I know why you like when your guy, Mr. Fed, wins so much”

haha jane. yes, it is a very good feeling. and if they win the big one..oh boy, cant explain the feeling. I am sure you are waiting to be reminded the 2008 AO. it almost happened in USO this year but alas..

Hoping for a better year for my faves next season (sorry i am biased but thats the way it is)

Kimmi Says:

for those interested. some great davis cup picture on tennisplanet.

Wheeler Says:

Very good for Nole and Serbia, I am happy. Now Novak, WILL YOU START WINNING MORE GRAND SLAMS AND TURN YOUR ATTENTION TO THE FAR MORE IMPORTANT TOURNAMENTS LIKE ATP 1000s AND THE SLAMS? Davis Cup is good for team spirit and country patriotism but it is the silliest “team competition” I have ever seen in any sport. Tennis is an individual sport and Davis Cup is a Djoke.

dari Says:

nah, wheeler, that was a very important tournament! and he played great tennis consistently in it throughout the year.
but if you must, i suppose he might feel a bit more “free” to concentrate on majors since this part of his heart is full. :) i really hope he wins another major, he is a great ball striker and is getting his serve back!
thanks kimmi, those are greaT!

Eskay Says:

Djoker is no joke, is a known fact. But it is Troicki who is the player to watch in 2011. It is not known why Tipsarevic was preferred over Troicki in first singles. Given his performance against players like Djokovic and Nadal in last few months, he can be expected to rise into top 20.

Nina Says:

It’s funny that people nowadays don’t give a rat’s ass about Davis Cup when before the Open Era it was the most important and prestigious tournament for players and fans.
I say what Serbia and Novak have achieved is historical and formidable. He even went as far as saying this was the most important win of his career.
But I agree… please Novak focus on winning your second slam now, will ya pretty please?

stu Says:

Yeah, how bout AO2011 Novak?

jane Says:

dari – very nice post! Thanks for that; I like the way you put it “part of his heart is full” and I think you’re exactly right. From the beginning of the year, it’s like he set out with this title in mind; that’s why I was so hopefully they’d win as I think it would’ve been crushing to get to the final and not do so, especially in front of the home crowd. Even at the beginning of the year, with no serve, I remember watching him gut out DC wins (esp. that 5 setter versus Isner – Nole was double fault king then!). Novak also got his first grass title this year, albeit in doubles (I think it was his first doubles title too) at Queens, so that was a good step. As was beating Fed at the USO. That made the ATP list of most memorable matches of the year; here’s the list:

http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2010/12/Other/Best-Matches-Of-The-Year.aspx

Having said all of the above, of course we fans want to see Nole win another slam. But getting to his first final of a slam since he won in 2008 was a step in the right direction. Maybe Murray or Soda will get one next year too. Both have been in a couple of finals now.

Finally Kimmi thanks for posting that link; I liked those photos of all the guys in black!

Twocents Says:

Way to go, Team Serbia (beating my favorite team headed by a nice Guy Forget-me-not).

Good fight from Team France.

Keep it up in 2011, Djok.

Could someone please summarize what they all said in their speeches, especially at the celebrations in Serbia the next night?
