Sinner Sinks Djokovic Not Once But Twice, Sends Italy To Davis Cup Finals vs Australia
Last week at the ATP Finals, Jannik Sinner met Novak Djokovic twice, falling in the final on Sunday. Today, the two met twice in the Davis Cup semifinals Sinner won both sending Italy to the Davis Cup finals.
Sinner came from 4-5, 0-40 and three match points down in the third to stun Djokovic in singles 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. The 22-year-old won 13 of the last 16 points.
“Congratulations to Italy for qualifying for finals”, said Djokovic to the Davis Cup website. “They deserved it. They played really well, particularly Jannik, in singles against me and then doubles as well. He barely missed a ball the entire match.
Among Djokovic’s goals for the month was winning another Davis Cup title for Serbia.
“For me personally it’s a huge disappointment, because I take the responsibility, obviously having three match points, being so close to winning it. When you lose for your country, the bitter feeling is even greater.”
Djokovic’s had two losses since Wimbledon, both to Sinner. Djokovic has also won 21 straight matches in Davis Cup.
“Match of my life? I don’t know”, said Sinner. “But it’s for sure very important. It helps a lot the last competition that it’s a team competition, because you get a lot of energy from your teammates, from the whole team, and then the crowd is different. I really enjoyed playing today. It was a great match.”
Miomir Kecmanovic topped Lorenzo Musetti to put Serbia on top with a 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-1.
And then Djokovic had three match points to send Serbia back to the finals. Djokovic had another chance in the deciding doubles. Team with Kecmanovic, Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego clinched the win 6-3, 6-4.
Italy will now take on Australia who ousted Finland 2-0 in their semifinal on Friday. Italy last won the Davis Cup in 1976. They last made the final in 1998.
Australia is 3-0 against Italy in Davis Cup finals. They two nations last met in the 1993 quarterfinals.
Australia will have Alex De Minaur and either Alexei Popyrin or Jordan Thompson in the two slot.
