World No. 1 Rafael Nadal was interviewed earlier today at an airport in Spain. Nadal was with his girlfriend Francesca “Xisca” Perello checking in for his flight to Abu Dhabi when the media caught up to him.

Nadal will play his first match in Abu Dhabi exhibition on Friday against the winner of the Tomas Berdych-Marcos Baghdatis clash.

Roger Federer is also in the draw and he too received a first round bye.

Kimmi Says:

Holidays are over. back to the grueling tennis season again. good luck to all players for 2011.

“and he too received a first round bye”

This exhibition is not a proper tournament, not only because it does not count towards the ranking, but also because it fields only 6 players.

Nadal and Federer do not have a first round bye, they go straight into semis. The losers (not only the winners) then also play between themselves. That way each player gets to play minimum 2 matches, and gets paid per match.

In short, an exhibition.

Kimmi Says:

bibi, yes it is an exho but more competative than other exhos. eg,charity matches that fed and nadal played few days ago really did not matter who wins but here they try to bring their best.

Catherine Says:

A nice payed practice session, nothing more, nothing less…

Dana99 Says:

Don’t forget…it was Abu Dhabi in late 2009/early 2010 where Rafa took down Soderling after a painful year overall. Rafa went on to make 2010 his most memorable. Abu Dhabi may be an exhibition, but we’ll be getting our first look at some improvements for 2011 being made by all the players, especially Fed and Nadal who are more than aware of the likelihood of facing each other in the AO. Let the games begin! :)
