Novak Djokovic puts his 20-match win-streak on the line Friday at the Sony Ericsson Miami against Denis Istomin. Also in second round play will be No. 4 Robin Soderling, No. 5 Andy Murray, No. 6 David Ferrer and No. 9 Fernando Verdasco.

“To be honest, I am playing great and I’m feeling good on the court,” Djokovic said today. “The results are coming with the hard work that I’m putting in with my team, so my priority for the next period and the continuation of this season is to try to stay healthy and try to continue on playing this well.”

For the women, No. 2 seed Kim Clijsters will test her injured right shoulder against Yakimova. No. 3 seed Vera Zvonareva plays countrywoman Dinara Safina and Ana Ivanovic meets 40-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm.

Murray, who has lost his last three matches, opens the Miami event against qualifier Alex Bogomolov, Jr. Soderling faces the only man to take a set off Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, Ivan Dodig.

In other matches, Milos Raonic meets Somdev Devvarman, Juan Martin Del Potro and Philllip Kolhschreiber tangle in an Indian Wells rematch and Americans Mardy Fish, Sam Querrey, John Isner and James Blake are also in action.

In play Thursday, World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki won her first match defeating Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-2, 7-5.

“Bethanie is a tough player to play,’ the Dane said. “You never know what to expect from her, and she’s going for her shots no matter where she’s standing on the court and it’s difficult to get the rhythm. Especially in the first match you want to get going, you want to have the rallies. But I really couldn’t get that today, so I just had to fight. I thought I did that pretty well.”

Also, playing in her first Miami event in four years, Maria Sharapova dominated Croatian Petra Martic 6-3, 6-2.

“This is one of my favorite events. I’m just so happy to get back on that court today and I love playing in front of the crowd,” Sharapova said. “They’re so enthusiastic. They love their sports and have that Latin flavor about them.”

For the men, WC Ryan Harrison fell to Germany’s Rainier Schuettler 7-5, 6-2. Fellow youngsters Grigor Dmitrov, Richard Berankis and Jack Sock joined Harrison at the exits.

But Japan’s Kei Nishikori won a date with World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the second round after beating Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 7-6(5), 6-2.

“He’s No. 1 right now, and it’s going to be my challenge match,” said Nishikori about playing Nadal. “I’m really excited to play. Always I’m excited to play like Rafa and top players. I will do my best. I have to do something different in my game, a little bit, of course. But I guess more aggressive than usual.”

Janko Tipsarevic and Radek Stepanek, who now plays Roger Federer, were other winners on the men’s side.

28 Comments for Djokovic, Murray, Soderling Open Play Friday in Miami; Sharapova, Wozniacki Winners

stu Says:

Not “continue on playing this well”, Nole, you gotta play better dude! You managed to eke out two big wins, but rest assured those two will come back with a new strategy to play against you! Serving in the 50% range won’t cut it. And come to the net more and save those knees, will ya?

Dory Says:

Anyone know when the TV coverage is starting?

Tennis Vagabond Says:

OH NO! Another Game For knocked out by Devvarman. Wonder how this went/]? Was Devvarman all moonballs and speed?

Dory Says:

Milos Raonic got defeated Somdev Devvarman.

scineram Says:

Bogomolov with the double break. Murray serves at 1-5.

Daniel Says:

Murray is going down. Can’t believe it! 4 matches lost in a row.

Daniel Says:

Will he do a Coria now and never recover. Because playing on clay is not the best prep for fim. He can lose even uglier. My God, what a turn of events…

Tennis Vagabond Says:

WHOA! Murray gone! My fantasy draw, ruined! Ruined! Why do you hate me Andy?

jane Says:

^ TV so is mine – unless Rafa wins. Now I hope Nole doesn’t have a letdown. Are you in the TX fan group TV??

fern Says:

Second time in a row Murray has gone down to someone outside the top 100.

Kimmi Says:

I think somdev is one to watch, he is backing up his performance in IW. Raonic, what happened to the serve today?

I feel the worst is coming for muzza!

Wawa and verdasco out. Go gasquet.. rescue me please

sheila Says:

im stunned that murray lost another 1st rd match. seems his confidence is in the toilet. warinka & verdasco gone as well. hope this does not continue tomorrow w/roger. pls let c him get thru. if he could do well in miami he can put some pts btwn him & murray & hopefully soderling. i dont c roger getting #1 but i would love 2c him get #2 ranking back. i think roger doesnt have many pts 2defend in miami or on the clay & if he could some how do well @ least he can gain some pts, hopefully. once again im stunned murray went out in 1st rd again. i think his loss 2 djokovic in australia took its toll on his confidence. its amazing since djokovic won federer @ 2010 uso how his confidence has blossomed.

Duro Says:

Nole, 6:0 again? Oh my…

Miki Says:

Yeah, I still kinda don’t believe this :D

Duro Says:

Any streaming, people?

But hurry up, it won’t last long…

Duro Says:

Don’t bother… It’s all over.

6:0; 6:1.

19+2+3 and counting…

In Novak we trust!

Cheers all.

Lulu Iberica Says:

Holy cow! I think Djoko’s going for some kind of record of fewest GAMES lost in a season. Maybe he and Murray are on some sort of opposite trajectory and the worse one does, the better the other one does! So far, ‘dasco’s out, Murray’s out, Wawa’s out. Craziness!

skeezerweezer Says:

2 Stunned

1 Stun – Murray out 1rst rd. C’mon Muzza!

2 Stun – Novak after the run this year still has the givin the smackdown and continuin on with his Mojo! Noooollleeeee…

Dan Martin Says:

Murray is in a serious tailspin. I think he needs to do one of two things: A. Take his next tournament or two off &/or B. Give Jimmy Connors a call – Jimbo may be able to help Murray adopt the one persona that can get the London media pressure off of his back a.k.a. giving the double bird to his home media & all of the expectations. He needs that Ivan Drago moment of saying he fights for himself and no one else. Beyond that Jimbo would tell him to embrace his omnipresent mother. So long as Jimmy does not convince him to just charge the net mindlessly, Jimmy could be what Murray’s psyche needs. Hire Jimmy solely to absorb his persona. Let some other coaches work on his fitness and mechanics.

Dory Says:

Davydenko also out in 1st round. What’s wrong with him? Never performs consistently.

Dory Says:

I am floored by Djokovic’s performance. Way to grow up Novak. 6-0, 6-1 is the standard score for him now.

Dory Says:

Is it because that this is a combined event of ATP and WTA that TV covergae is starting on Saturday? Masters 1000s used to be 1-week tournaments. I hate to miss out 2nd round matches. Esp Devvarman vs Raonic, Murray’s, Soderling’s and JMDP’s.

jane Says:

“With this win, Djokovic equals the third-longest winning streak to start a season in the last 30 years, 19 wins in a row (tied with John McEnroe in 1985).”

skeezerweezer Says:

Great dig jane…..

And for all the Girl Macfans that can’t get enough of his bootybod ( let’s see if Rafa looks like this when he is huggin 50 years old ). Looks like Jmac can still have his shirt tucked in and all is ok….

http://photos.toofab.com/galleries/john_mcenroe_beachin_it_in_st_barth#tab=most_recent

JMac just beat Sampras, Krickstein and Courier, all 10 years younger or more in a recent tourney. And some think Fed is done? C’mon Fed, make Jmac proud!

George Foreman paved they way…here is a toast for the “older gen” :-)

margot Says:

skeeze darling: Johnny Mac is one of my favourite players ever….but hot he’s not, nor ever was ;) Now Vera’s “coach” well now you’re talking :) Wonder if he could take on Andy, killing two birds with one stone for me, so to speak ;)
PS have seen Mac at RG playing in the veteran doubles with Paoline, I think, and having a WONDERFUL time. That’s the way to do it!

jane Says:

But margot, i was amazed at how buff / fit JMac looks in those pics – the guy is what? Mid-50s? Not bad then. ;)

margot Says:

jane: I seee, it’s the mature older man for u ;)
but am glad he hasn’t got fat, wouldn’t suit :)
