2012 Tennis-X Year-end Top 10 Contest — Enter Today!

You think you know your stuff? The order the “Big 4” will finish in 2012, which veterans will drop out of the Top 10 and which young bucks will make their marks? Whether Andy Roddick has any Top 10 juice left? Whether Jo-Wilfried Tsonga can look even more like Muhammad Ali in 2012?

If you’ve got the stuff, then show it by entering the 2012 Tennis-X Year-end Top 10 contest, where the winner will receive a fabulous, fabulous, FABULOUS prize pack, the finalists will be touted, and the suck pickers will be vilified.

But beware of the injured, both physical (Roddick, Robin Soderling) and mental (hey, Roddick and Soderling again!), and the creepers (Nicolas Almagro in the Top 10? Really?)

In 2011 only three contestants (lowest ever) were able to correctly pick seven out of the Top 10 year-end finishers. In 2011 N-Dru from Down Under took home the prize, breaking the tie with the most players picked in the correct order (only one!) Told you this isn’t as easy as you think.

So pick your Top 10, and place them carefully. An example:

1. The guy who doesn’t eat bread
2. The muscle-y Spaniard
3. The GOAT
4. The pasty kid
5. The Spanish Michael Chang
6. The Greatest
7. The Slam choker
8. The guy with the shaky forehand
9. The guy with the tats
10. The other other Spaniard

Just kidding, use real names, their full names. Or your entry gets tossed. Post your Top 10 here in the comment section of this story before the first ball is hit in the 2012 season, and you’re in. Not even an entry fee! Good luck and happy holidays!

NOTE: Only your first entry will be accepted.

grendel Says:

I assume along with everyone that the top 4 will be at least in the top 10 – let’s be bold, and go for them staying top 4 – but, any order. Let’s face it, any is possible – wny not go for Murray as #1?
That leaves 6. Got to have del Potro, 5 to go. no one – no one! – has Roddick. I think he has one more good year in him, and he’s certainly making good noises, you feel he’s up for it. Fish, who has finally recognized what he is capable of, will continue the good work, if not that tough looking wife of his will have something to say which I expect he’d rather avoid.
3 left. How could one not have Tsonga and Berdych? Last one. Would be Soderling, but:”“I am very sorry for being away for so long and for not giving many updates but my recovery has been longer than expected,” expressed Soderling on his twitter account. “I am feeling better with each day but it will still take some time before I can start practicing in full speed. My goal is to start with practice in January and I hope for tournament comeback in February but at this stage it is hard to know when and where. I hope my body will allow me to do that.”

Doesn’t sound too good to me. So last place goes to Tipsarevic. That’s a kind of boring choice, I’d much rather Tomic or Dolgopolov, but Tipsy is solid, confident – a good man to sneak a tenner on.

Steve27 Says:

Many commenters puts Federer first place. Like Mc Enroe said: Are you kidding me!. haahhaa Federer is over, and i think is his last year in top 5. no doubts AND HIS FINAL GRAND SLAM COULd BE IN SEPTEMBER IN THE US OPEN. Then is over. No disrespect to someone like Federer. The last oportunitty to a tennis player is when you are in 30s and 31s, then is practically impossible to reach any sucess in any grand slam with the exceptions of Agassi and of course Rosewall. My top 3 for 2012 Nadal, Murray (i think he will have his first grand slam) and djokovic. Happy wishes to all of you in 2012!.

Tennis X,

How about throwing in “Who will be the dark horse to crack the top 10?”( Can’t be currently in the Top 10 )

Kimmi Says:

1. Djokovic (his year might not be the same as 2011 but will do well regardless. he is now in his peak, two years at the top is reasonable)

2. Nadal (starts to get his confidence back, wins some big finals against his nemesis djokovic but not enough to pass him)

3. federer ( he is determined to get back to the top. this year could be his last push. he reaches number one for couple of weeks and loses it right away but then he would break the record of most weeks at number one).

4. Murray (seriously, this year has to be the year when he is breaking through, if not it will get tougher. needs to win his first major..soon).

OK, i just realized that top 4 list is exactly as last year, c’mon, it has to change. was there two years were the top 4 finish has been exactly the same? I doubt it.

OK, now for the rest.

5. Tsonga (he is safe here as number 5 i think. the guy has realized his potential. I see him break into top 4 if no injuries. wins some more big matches against top 4).

6. Del potro (He continues to rise. he has the ability to break into top 4. his wrist injury seem to be behind him now.)

7. berdych (not sure what to think of this guy. I will leave him here, i think it is safe enough. I see him some great results and a stretch of bad results. but still finishing in top 10)

8. Ferrer (ferrer has done remarkable in 2011, i think it might be too much to ask for him to have another great year. a top 10 finish, why not)

this is where it gets tougher. who can sneak in a top 10 finish, lots of possibilities.

9/10. Fish (he is due for another good year), Cilic (c’mon, this guy should be in the top 5, so much talent but…), Tomic (OK, probably wishful thinking, the guy is only..what 19? he probably needs more years to mature), Monfils (if only he can stay injury free), florian Mayer (this is my wish, the guy has so much talent imo..maybe 2012 will be his year, he will be 29 next year not a spring chicken), Nishikori (I can see him continuing from last year, and this year even better), tipsarevic (one more year at the top?)

I am not going to predict the order of the TOP10, but Tomic said recently that he expects to be in the TOP10 by october (his birthday). He even organise with Novak , a bit of practice before AO and after Abu Dhabi. Lets wait and see. I think he should be happy if he makes TOP20 by the end of year.

andrea Says:

in everyone’s hearts they have one top 10 list, but the mind needs to be clinical. grendel, you may be the only person left championing roddick. i feel for the guy, but don’t see him coming back this late in the game and i actually think he is going to retire in 2012. call me crazy…

i hope roger takes #1 for at least 2 weeks in 2012 to break sampras’ record, but can’t see him ending the year there. djokovic has tons of points to defend but he’s proven to be very resilient (end of the season not counting) and will be a contender in every event. nadal…well, his outlook on tennis in the past year has been increasingly tinged with frustration and complaints – not to mention psyche crushing losses – and of all of the top players, i see him leaving tennis early…a la borg.
