Americans Isner, Querrey, Harrison, Blake Highlight Memphis Tuesday
American tennis will be on full display Tuesday at Memphis. Top seed John Isner leads the way against Gilles Muller. It’s Isner’s first match since beating Roger Federer at the Davis Cup two weeks ago, and he’s beaten Muller both times the two have played.
Memphis 2010 Champion Sam Querrey, who has just hired Brad Gilbert, takes on Mardy Fish’s Australian Open conqueror Alejandro Falla. Querrey and Gilbert will work on a trial basis through Miami. Gilbert most recently worked with Kei Nishikori just last season.
Former finalist James Blake opens his 2012 season against fellow American Ryan Sweeting. The 32-year-old Blake is coming off a knee injury which has kept him out of the Australian Open.
And in an all-American matchup of up of rising stars, Ryan Harrison tests Jack Sock. Harrison just reached his third career ATP semifinal this past weekend in San Jose, lifting his ranking to a career-high No. 73 this week. Sock is a former US Open junior champion.
In two mild upsets yesterday, young guns Bernard Tomic and Grigor Dimitrov were both losers in the narrowest of fashions. Tomic squandered to match points in a tough loss to Ivan Dodig 57 64 76(8). Donald Young did the honors to Dimitrov, beating the Bulgarian 76(4) 46 76(6).
Women’s top seed Nadia Petrova was also upset by qualifier Camila Giorgi of Italy 64, 62.
2011 finalists Milos Raonic, Andy Roddick are scheduled for Wednesday.
