Rafael Nadal won a record 8th Barcelona title today overcoming a 3-0 first set deficit to beat Nicolas Almagro 64 62. Nadal said afterward that winning in his home country and with his fans in attendance was extra emotional.

“I feel very happy to lift the trophy once again here in Barcelona,” Nadal said. “It means a lot especially after the difficult year I’ve had. The conditions were very difficult today, especially in the first six games as it was raining a lot.”

Nadal admitted in the video interview that rainy, cool weather like in Barcelona today creates more issues for his knees than when it’s hot and sunny.

Rafa has won 39 straight matches in Barcelona (80 of 82 sets) and now since coming back in February he’s won four of six events he’s entered, dropping just the Monte Carlo final last weekend. His four titles and 27 match wins this season are also best on the tour.

Rafa’s also a perfect 10-0 career against Almagro and he’s never lost to a fellow Spaniard in a final (13-0).

Nadal will have a week of rest before Madrid a week from today.

I have lot of emotional days in Spring and Summer, and I am male.

skeezer Says:

Like I said, even excuses when he wins.

Nico, are your reading this? Your loss is even more humilating, no?

Sorry dude.

Michael Says:

Congrats to Rafa for winning Barcelona for a record eighth time. It is indeed a unique feat unparalleled in the history of this sport where Nadal must be the only player to win two tournaments eight times. One is a 1000 and other is 500. This only testifies that Nadal is not finished yet and he has some scores to settle. I think if at all he is vulnerable on Clay it is only against one player and his name is Novak Djokovic, a phenomenon in his own right.

Michael Says:

All said and done players like Almagor, Ferrer, Berdych can give their hope of beating Rafa on any surface. Simply they are not that good to beat him.

The Joker bite the dust of defeat in RG again.
