Roger Federer turns 33 today, but it’s a working birthday. Last night the Swiss outlasted Marin Cilic in a dramatic three set win to reach the quarters in Toronto where tonight he’ll meet David Ferrer.

Federer said after the match which ended 29 minutes shy of his birthday that the tournament had prepared something special in celebration.

“There is some cupcakes or little things,” Federer told the press. “I just got presented little cakes, so if you guys want some, I can’t finish it all. I’m happy to share with you guys, of course.”

And when asked what his biggest achievement has been as a pro, he joked, “becoming 33 has been my biggest one.”

Federer has won all 14 meetings against Ferrer.

Happy Birthday Roger.

MMT Says:

These two haven’t played in almost two years and that was on a very fast and low bouncing indoor surface. In that match, Federer broke once in the first, and the second set went to a tie-break.

Ferrer’s game has improved significantly since then, the same cannot be said for Federer’s and to be honest, I didn’t think he looked great against Cilic.

Ferrer had is problems with Dodig, but he worked through them, which is usually a good sign that a player’s game is getting back on track. Particularly after an injury. I don’t think fatigue will come into it, because Ferrer is very fit.

I’m guessing it will be a 3 set match, and as such, it’s 50/50 who will win it.

Michael Says:

My heartiest Happy birthday wishes to Roger. He has turned 33, but he is still playing like 23. It is difficult to believe that he is 33 when you see him on court retrieving those balls with ease, elegance and grace and serving with enormous speed and variety. Most players in tour are envious of Roger about the way he maintains his fitness. They believe that Gods made Roger for Tennis and thereby were a little bit partial towards them. The fact that he has not missed even one Grand slam and has played on a trot is something unbelievable and in a way miraculous. It just goes to show as to how he has managed to maintain his fitness levels in such a competitive sport which is praise worthy. On court, it would appear that he is not trying too hard. But, the way he digs out half volleys with immaculate precision and ease would shame even a young gun. Half volleys are the most difficult shot to execute in Tennis just because you cannot practice them regularly.

madmax Says:

Belated Bday wishes to Roger.

The best.

TennisFan Says:

Yeah, Fed sure looked good out there on the courts last night in Toronto. Was impressed with Ferrer’s level too … particularly given hard courts are not his forte. This is Fed’s tournament to win now … only Tsonga if he stays on form might give him a run for it … but If Rog is on he will still get by.
