Unfortunate news for Juan Martin del Potro and his fans. The Argentine announced that he underwent a second surgery on his left wrist earlier today.

Del Potro withdrew from the Australian Open because of continued pain in that left wrist. After seeing the doctor, a second, minor surgery was performed.

“A few hours ago I was in Australia, today at the Mayo Clinic,” del Potro wrote on Facebook. “As recommended by my doctor, I underwent a minor surgery to fix the problem that caused me pain in the wrist. I feel more determined than ever to return to the courts sooner than later, to play tennis without feeling pain and to enjoy the love that you give me. I will begin rehabilitation in two weeks. Thanks!!”

There is no timetable for return.

SG1 Says:

Now this is lousy news. Was looking forward to seeing DelPo back in the mix. Why didn’t the first surgery get things right?

Daniel Says:

Poor Delpo. Must be really frustrating. he was so happy when he won his first match two weeks ago. Maybe he can return playing during clay season. Hope everything is fine now and he can play pain free,

jane Says:

this is disappointing; hopefully they’ve solved the issue now.

TennisVagabond.com Says:

Doesn’t smell right at all.
How can you get doctors clearance to play; then have pain but say its normal and have medical assurance it won’t cause additional harm; then days later be in surgery again?
It smells like a desperate man who won’t take no for an answer.
I hope I’m wrong.

dari Says:

Hi TV. I read somewhere the doc recommended this procedure and Juan said no. Now that hes set back he’s saying yes I guess.
Wish him all the best

Danica Says:

What a bummer :(. I am really sorry to hear this news. I hope whatever the problem was is now fixed and he will only need a short amount of time to get back to courts.

Truly, truly disappointing news :(

Margot Says:

Never say never, but I fear this is never. :(

TennisVagabond.com Says:

Thanks Dari, that makes a bit more sense, but what would be the timing? He’s been off for almost a year, and has been in rehab for months, how could this not have come up with and been dealt with earlier?
